The steroids used to treat asthma are known as corticosteroids. These are not the same as the steroids that some bodybuilders use, which are called anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroid abuse, and bigorexia, are treatable, and people can find a balance in their lives without the use of mind and body altering drugs.

These include asthma, eczema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lupus and multiple sclerosis. Corticosteroids, or commonly just referred to as steroids, are a common medication used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as an induction therapy. However, they do have some serious and undesirable side effects which can occur if they are taken for a sustained period of time.

Why is it important that I do not stop taking steroids without medical advice to do so?

It does not contain steroids, so it cannot reduce inflammation in your airways. The steroids in asthma medicines lower your risk of having an asthma attack. They do this by treating inflammation in your airways (this is when your airways are swollen and narrow).

As corticosteroids can cause weakening of the bones your doctor will probably suggest you take calcium and vitamin D (to help absorb the calcium) supplements at the same time. Older patients have higher rates of multimorbidity and digital exclusion. The GP may refer you to a specially trained drugs counsellor.

• If you are prescribed a course of oral steroids you should complete the course or seek advice from your doctor or asthma nurse if you have any side effects.
• Outside of medical settings, people tend to get hold of anabolic steroid through unregulated websites.
• A person cannot bulk up enough, weigh enough, or have enough muscle to satisfy what is driving them.
• They might refer you to a specialist addiction service or a trained drugs counsellor.
• They can let you know if you should be carrying a steroid card.
• They should explain the benefits and potential side effects of taking steroids so that you can decide together on the best course of action in your particular situation.

The only real difference between them is the balance of ‘androgenic’ and ‘anabolic’ effects. The former refers to male sexual characteristics – “pubic hair, genital development, greasy skin” – while the latter deals with building muscle tissue. But I’ve also got to say, the pain, the pain of the nerve damage, nobody could describe it.

I’m worried about my child taking steroids

I think some of it is really just the challenge of seeing someone so ill, I think. Then I’d come back, and I would look like a Victorian ghost, I just looked so ill and unwell and a million miles away from the person that left the house in the morning. So, I mean [sighs] the steroids were good for me in, obviously in terms of helping me get better, but unfortunately they have such bad side effects for some people. I mean my shoe size went up from five to six right at the beginning, and clothing as well.

Is there anything I should know before taking corticosteroids?

Do not stop taking corticosteroids suddenly if you have been taking them for more than three weeks. Your body normally makes its own steroid chemicals and when you take steroid tablets your body may reduce or stop making its own steroid chemicals. If the dose is reduced gradually, the body resumes its natural production of steroids and the symptoms do not occur, although some have to withdraw more slowly than others to avoid low energy and fatigue.

Taking any drug while using steroids puts extra strain on your liver. As steroids can affect your mood it is advisable to avoid other drugs that change your mental state. Steroids are also known as anabolic steroids, ‘roids, gear, sauce or juice (e.g. ‘on the juice’).

Side effects of steroid tablets

Take them exactly as your doctor, nurse or pharmacist explains. Do not stop taking them without talking to your doctor first. If your child hasn’t steroids for sale pills had chicken pox, and is in direct contact with a child who has chicken pox, or develops it within 48 hours, contact the hospital immediately.
